Right Angle Cross of Laws: Incarnation Cross Meaning

6 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, the points split into two lit and two dimmer to suggest conscious and unconscious gates.

Four gates, two sides of the chart. The Right Angle Cross of Laws is built from gate 3 (Ordering), gate 50 (Values), gate 60 (Acceptance) and gate 56 (Stimulation). Every variant uses the same four, but the conscious Personality side and the unconscious Design side swap which pair they hold, so the cross feels different depending on where the Sun sits. In Human Design the incarnation cross is described as a life theme. One way to read Laws is as a theme about how order, values, limits and stories take shape, and this page follows how each variant hands the gates out.

Conscious pair, unconscious pair

A cross is written as Personality Sun and Earth, then Design Sun and Earth. The Personality side is the conscious one, what a person tends to recognise in themselves, and the Design side is the unconscious one. The Laws variants rotate the same four gates around those two slots, and each is keyed to the gate holding the Personality Sun.

  • Laws (3/50 | 60/56), Sun in gate 3 about April 16 to 22: Personality holds gates 3 and 50, Design holds 60 and 56.
  • Laws 2 (56/60 | 3/50), Sun in gate 56 about July 19 to 24: Personality holds 56 and 60, Design holds 3 and 50.
  • Laws 3 (50/3 | 56/60), Sun in gate 50 about October 19 to 25: Personality holds 50 and 3, Design holds 56 and 60.
  • Laws 4 (60/56 | 50/3), Sun in gate 60 about January 16 to 22: Personality holds 60 and 56, Design holds 50 and 3.

So the Ordering and Values pair is conscious in the first and third variants and unconscious in the second and fourth. Acceptance and Stimulation do the opposite. Within each pair, the two gates sit opposite each other on the wheel, which is why the Sun and Earth always share a pair. The dates shift by about a day from year to year, and someone born near an edge needs the exact chart.

Mutation: the channel Laws always completes

Gate 3, Ordering, is a Sacral gate, and gate 60, Acceptance, is a Root gate. They are the two ends of the channel 3-60, called Mutation. Both gates are always active in Laws, whether on the Personality or the Design side, so the channel is complete in every variant and defines the Sacral and the Root. This is the same logic as 37-40 in Planning and 18-58 in Service: when a cross holds both ends of a channel, nothing else is needed to switch it on.

One way to see the pairing is that Ordering reaches for something new, while Acceptance respects the limit that shapes it. Read that way, the cross carries a question about how much structure a beginning needs before it can grow.

Sacral, Spleen, Root and Throat in one cross

The four gates sit in four different centres: gate 3 in the Sacral, gate 50 in the Spleen, gate 60 in the Root and gate 56 in the Throat. Mutation joins the Sacral and the Root, two of the motor centres in Human Design, so the cross brings a defined motor pair into every chart that carries it. The Spleen and Throat gates are a different case. Neither has its partner in the cross, so they stay single activations unless the rest of the chart supplies a channel.

Values and stimulation between them

Gate 50, Values, belongs to the Spleen and links to gate 27 in the channel called Preservation. Gate 56, Stimulation, belongs to the Throat and links to gate 11 in the channel called Curiosity. Neither partner is in the cross, so these two gates reach outward on their own.

As interpretation, Values asks what a group should keep, and Stimulation turns experience into something that can be told. Together they suggest a person who weighs what matters and then finds words, a story or a question that carries it. That is a reading of the gate names, and it fits some lives better than others.

Gates 3 and 60 are always both active in Laws, so the channel 3-60, Mutation, is complete in every variant.

Laws 2 beside Laws 4

These two variants put gates 56 and 60 on the conscious side and gates 3 and 50 on the Design side. What changes is which gate takes the Sun. In Laws 2, 56/60 | 3/50, the Sun is in gate 56 and the Earth in 60, and the Design Sun is in gate 3. In Laws 4, 60/56 | 50/3, the Sun is in gate 60 and the Earth in 56, and the Design Sun is in gate 50.

The first Laws against the third

The other two variants are related in the same way. Gates 3 and 50 are conscious in both, with the Sun in gate 3 and the Earth in 50 in the first, and the Sun in gate 50 and the Earth in 3 in the third. The Design side holds 60 and 56 in both, with the Design Sun in gate 60 in the first and in gate 56 in the third. Across the four variants, then, the conscious pair alternates between 3 and 50 and 56 and 60, and inside each pair the Sun and Earth take turns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my birthday alone tell me if I have the Cross of Laws?

Not reliably. The Sun date points to a Personality Sun gate, but the cross also depends on the Earth gate and the two Design gates, calculated from the exact birth time and place. Someone born in the April window might have this cross or a different one that shares that Sun gate.

What sets Laws 2 apart from Laws 4?

Both put gates 56 and 60 on the conscious side and 3 and 50 on the Design side. They differ in which gate takes the Sun: 56 in Laws 2, with the Sun about July 19 to 24, and 60 in Laws 4, with the Sun about January 16 to 22. The Design Sun is gate 3 in Laws 2 and gate 50 in Laws 4.

Which aspect of a chart does the Design side show?

In Human Design the Design side is the unconscious one, usually described as what a person lives out without noticing. In the Laws variants it carries either gates 3 and 50 or gates 60 and 56, depending on the variant. It is a descriptive layer, not a fixed prediction.

Do all four gates need to be active for the cross to matter?

Yes, all four are always present, because the cross is the four gates at the Sun and Earth positions. Gates 3 and 60 always complete the channel Mutation, while 50 and 56 hang until gate 27 or gate 11 appears elsewhere in the chart.
