Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, each arm reaching a different season.

A cross can seem tied to one stretch of the calendar. This one is tied to four. The Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways is carried by people whose Personality Sun sits in gate 24, 33, 44 or 19, and those four gates are spread across the whole year, one for each quarter of the wheel. The first variant reads 24/44 | 19/33: Rationalization and Alertness on the Personality side, Wanting and Privacy on the Design side. Human Design calls an incarnation cross the life theme, and as a Right Angle cross this one belongs to personal destiny, with profiles from 1/3 through 4/6.

One name, four Sun gates, a full turn of the year

Each Right Angle cross has four variants, and what separates them is the gate holding the Personality Sun. For the Four Ways that is gate 24 for a Sun around April 27 to May 3, gate 33 around July 30 to August 5, gate 44 around October 31 to November 5 and gate 19 around January 27 to February 2. These dates shift by about a day from year to year. Between them they cover the wheel at roughly three-month intervals, so a spring, summer, autumn and winter birth can each carry the same cross name. What stays fixed is the set of four gates; what changes is which of them stands in the Sun position, and the other three rearrange around it.

Rationalization and Alertness as a pair

Gate 24, Rationalization, and gate 44, Alertness, are opposite each other on the wheel and always occupy the same side of the cross. Rationalization belongs to the Ajna centre and Alertness to the Spleen, so the pair spans thinking and instinct. One way to see them together is as mind beside instinct, with sorting out what happened and sensing what is about to happen treated as two halves of one activity.

Wanting and Privacy as a pair

The other axis joins gate 19, Wanting, in the Root with gate 33, Privacy, in the Throat. Wanting (Root) and Privacy (Throat) are the second pair; one reading sets reaching out beside withdrawing. Wanting is a Root gate and Privacy a Throat gate, so this axis joins pressure to voice, just as the first joins thinking to instinct. In the first variant this pair is the Design side, the unconscious half of the theme, while 24 and 44 are the conscious half.

Which pair leads in each variant

Gates 24 and 44 are on the Personality side in the first and third variants, 24/44 | 19/33 and 44/24 | 33/19, with the Sun in 24 in the first and in 44 in the third. Gates 19 and 33 take the Personality side in the second and fourth, 33/19 | 24/44 and 19/33 | 44/24, with the Sun in 33 and in 19. The other pair is always the Design half. The same name can therefore read quite differently from one variant to the next, because a different pair is the conscious one.

Gates 24, 44, 19 and 33 sit in four different centres, and none of their channel partners is part of the cross.

Ajna, Spleen, Root and Throat, one gate each

Gate 24 is in the Ajna, gate 44 in the Spleen, gate 19 in the Root and gate 33 in the Throat. No centre appears twice, unlike the Sphinx and the Vessel of Love, where all four gates share the G centre. Thinking, instinct, pressure and voice each appear once. Because a gate alone never defines a centre, the cross does not decide which of those centres are defined in the chart. It only marks the points on the wheel that the Sun and Earth were passing through at birth and, about three months earlier, at the Design moment.

Channels the Four Ways reaches for

Each gate has its channel partner outside the cross. Gate 24 pairs with gate 61 in Awareness, gate 44 with gate 26 in Surrender, gate 19 with gate 49 in Synthesis and gate 33 with gate 13 in Prodigal. The partners sit in the Head, Heart, Solar Plexus and G centre, so the four roads of the name point to four further places in the chart. A channel only comes alive when both of its gates are active, and the cross alone supplies just one end of each. If the chart supplies the missing gate, the Ajna, Spleen, Root or Throat gate of the cross becomes part of a complete channel; if it does not, that gate stays hanging, a single point that the cross activates without a link to anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Sun in gate 24, 33, 44 and 19?

Roughly April 27 to May 3 for gate 24, July 30 to August 5 for gate 33, October 31 to November 5 for gate 44 and January 27 to February 2 for gate 19. The dates can vary by about a day from one year to the next, and the Sun date alone does not confirm the cross.

Which planet decides the Four Ways variant?

The Personality Sun does. Its gate, 24, 33, 44 or 19, gives the variant number, and the Personality Earth sits in the opposite gate. The Design Sun and Earth then complete the quartet, so for the first variant the full set is 24/44 | 19/33.

What kind of cross is the Four Ways?

It is a Right Angle cross, which Human Design reads as personal destiny. It goes with profiles 1/3 through 4/6. Left Angle crosses, read as transpersonal karma, belong to profiles 5/1 to 6/3, and the single Juxtaposition cross type, read as fixed fate, goes with profile 4/1.

Can someone born in spring have the same cross as a winter birth?

Yes, if both carry a Four Ways variant. A Sun around late April sits in gate 24 and a Sun in late January sits in gate 19, yet both belong to the same cross name. They differ in which gate leads the quartet, not in the four gates themselves.
