Left Angle Cross of Migration: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, with a thin arc drawn from one arm toward the horizon.

Pick up the Right Angle Cross of Planning and the Left Angle Cross of Migration and the first thing you notice is how much they have in common. In their first variants both put Friendship and Aloneness in the Personality, gates 37 and 40, in the same positions. The two crosses only part ways underneath, where Planning has gates 9 and 16 and Migration has gates 5 and 35. This page reads Migration as exactly that: a Left Angle theme built on a familiar Personality pair, with a different unconscious partner and a different angle.

Same Sun gates as Planning, different Design

Migration's first variant is 37/40 | 5/35: Personality Sun in gate 37, Personality Earth in gate 40, Design Sun in gate 5, Design Earth in gate 35. The first variant of Planning is 37/40 | 9/16. The conscious pair is identical, and the Sun windows are the same, about February 24 to March 1.

Migration's second variant, 40/37 | 35/5, matches the third variant of Planning, 40/37 | 16/9, in the same way: Sun in gate 40, about August 29 to September 3, and the Design is where the difference lies. Planning's other two variants, with the Sun in gates 16 and 9, have no counterpart in Migration.

Community, complete in every Migration chart

Gate 37 is Friendship and sits in the Solar Plexus. Gate 40 is Aloneness and sits in the Heart. They are the two ends of the 37-40 channel, known as Community, and because the cross holds both gates the channel is complete in the chart. One reading sets the pull toward companionship against the need to stand apart, with the Sun placing the emphasis on one or the other.

Since gate 37 is in the Solar Plexus and gate 40 is in the Heart, those two centres are defined whenever the cross is present. Planning's first and third variants complete the same channel in the same way, so the Design is the only place the two crosses differ.

The Design pair that sets Migration apart

Gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, sits in the Sacral and is one end of the channel 5-15, Rhythm. Gate 35, Change, sits in the Throat and is one end of 35-36, Transitoriness. Where Planning's Design pairs Focus in the Sacral with Skills in the Throat, Migration's pairs Fixed Rhythms in the Sacral with Change in the Throat. The centres line up, gate for gate; only the gates change.

That makes the difference between the two crosses small on paper. Neither Design partner, 15 or 36, is in the cross, so the unconscious pair defines no centre by itself.

The missing partners would link different centres. Rhythm, 5-15, would join the Sacral to the G centre, and Transitoriness, 35-36, would join the Throat to the Solar Plexus. On the Design side Migration holds 5/35 and Migration 2 holds 35/5.

Take the same conscious pair, change what sits in the Design, and Human Design hands you a different angle, a different set of profiles and a different cross.

Planning's Sun in 16 and 9 has no Migration twin

A Right Angle name such as Planning has four variants, one for each quarter of the wheel, with the Sun in gates 37, 16, 40 and 9. A Left Angle name has two. Migration therefore keeps only the 37 and 40 Sun placements and drops the Sun in 16 and 9. Planning is described as personal destiny for profiles 1/3 through 4/6, while Migration is a Left Angle cross for profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Turning the pair around inside Migration

Within Migration itself the two variants differ only in which of the pair holds the Sun. In the first, Friendship is the Sun, Aloneness the Earth, Fixed Rhythms the Design Sun and Change the Design Earth. In the second, each pair is turned round, so Aloneness takes the Personality Sun and Change the Design Sun. The four gates stay the same.

The first variant's Sun window, about February 24 to March 1, falls in late winter and the second, about August 29 to September 3, in late summer in the northern hemisphere. Planning keeps its own windows for gates 16 and 9, and those belong to no Migration variant.

The name Migration and the gates behind it

The incarnation cross is described as the life theme or purpose, and the name Migration is given by the catalogue. The page makes no claim about literal travel or relocation, and the name carries no extra meaning beyond the cross it labels. What the cross does contain is four gates: Friendship, Aloneness, Fixed Rhythms and Change.

The catalogue lists Migration as a Left Angle cross with two variants, where Planning lists four. That difference in count is part of why the Sun in gate 37 or gate 40 is not enough to name the cross.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Migration different from the Right Angle Cross of Planning?

They share the Personality pair, gates 37 and 40, but not the Design or the angle. Planning's Design is 9/16 and its angle is Right, personal destiny. Migration's Design is 5/35 and its angle is Left, where the theme is described as running through other people. Planning also has four variants, while Migration has two.

If I was born in late February, is my cross Migration?

Not necessarily. A Sun in gate 37, about February 24 to March 1, fits the first variant of both Migration and Planning, and the Design decides between them. Other crosses can also have gate 37 as their Personality Sun. Only a calculated chart that includes the Design shows which cross is actually yours.

What sits under a Sun in gate 40 in Migration?

Migration 2, written 40/37 | 35/5, has the Personality Sun in gate 40, Aloneness, about August 29 to September 3. The Personality Earth is in gate 37 and the Design holds gates 35 and 5. The same Sun gate also starts Planning's third variant, so the Design is what separates them.

What changes when the Design is 5/35 instead of 9/16?

The unconscious gates change from Focus and Skills to Fixed Rhythms and Change, and the cross moves from the Right Angle family to the Left. The centres stay the same, Sacral and Throat, so the difference is in the named gates and in the profiles the cross suits.
