Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression: Incarnation Cross Meaning

Most incarnation crosses come in several versions, so the same name can be shared by people born in different parts of the year. This one does not. The Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression has a single arrangement, 1/2 | 4/49, and Human Design pairs it with a single profile, 4/1. It calls this fixed fate. For a page about one cross that is the main thing to understand: nothing varies, so the question is what a theme with no alternatives is supposed to mean, and what its four gates bring to it.
Fixed fate and a single arrangement
Human Design sorts crosses into three angles. A Right Angle is personal destiny and has four variants, a Left Angle is described as running through other people and has two, and a Juxtaposition is fixed fate and has one. Self-Expression is the Juxtaposition cross written 1/2 | 4/49: Personality Sun in gate 1, Personality Earth in gate 2, Design Sun in gate 4, Design Earth in gate 49. The Sun is in gate 1 from about November 5 to 11.
The phrase fixed fate is the system's own label. It should be taken as a way of framing a life theme, not as a prediction about events or a verdict on how much choice a person has day to day.
Profile 4/1 and nothing else
Right Angle crosses go with profiles 1/3 through 4/6, and Left Angle crosses with 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3. The 4/1 profile, Opportunist/Investigator, is the one that carries a Juxtaposition cross. So the cross and the profile arrive together: if the chart shows 4/1, the cross is a Juxtaposition one, and if it shows any other profile, this cross is not available. The 4/1 profile page covers what the two lines mean.
Both Self-Expression and the Sphinx variant that starts with gate 1 share gates 1 and 2 in the Personality. They differ only in the Design pair, which is 4/49 here and 7/13 in the Sphinx.
Self-Expression and Direction of the Self
Gate 1 is Self-Expression and gate 2 is Direction of the Self, and both sit in the G centre. They form the conscious pair. One reading is that the cross puts the question of who you are and where you are heading at the front of the theme, with the first gate naming the expression and the second the direction.
Gates 1 and 2 are wheel opposites, so the Sun and Earth always take one each. The same is true of gates 4 and 49 in the Design. In this single arrangement every gate has its opposite in the cross, and each of the two pairs fills one side of the chart.
Formulization and Principles in the Design
Gate 4 is Formulization and sits in the Ajna. Gate 49 is Principles and sits in the Solar Plexus. They carry the Design, so they describe the unconscious side of the theme. Both gates also appear in the Left Angle Cross of Revolution, whose Personality holds 49/4 or 4/49, though that is a separate cross with its own angle.
Gates 1 and 2 sit in the G centre, gate 4 in the Ajna and gate 49 in the Solar Plexus: three centres, and the cross alone defines none of them.
The Sphinx also opens on gate 1
It is tempting to assume that a single variant means a Sun in gate 1 is a giveaway. It is not. The Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx also has a variant with the Personality Sun in gate 1, written 1/2 | 7/13, and its Design differs from Self-Expression's 4/49. A birth date in the first part of November is a first clue, and the Design Sun and Earth, along with the 4/1 profile, complete the picture.
The contrast is easy to see in the centres. The Sphinx's Design gates, 7 and 13, stay inside the G centre alongside gates 1 and 2, while Self-Expression's Design leaves it for the Ajna and the Solar Plexus.
Partners 8, 14, 63 and 19 stay outside
Each gate in Self-Expression reaches for a channel partner that the cross does not hold. Gate 1 would pair with gate 8 in Inspiration and gate 2 with gate 14 in Beat. Gate 4 would pair with gate 63 in Logic and gate 49 with gate 19 in Synthesis.
Each partner would link a different pair of centres. Inspiration, 1-8, would join the G centre to the Throat, and Beat, 2-14, the G centre to the Sacral. Logic, 4-63, would join the Ajna to the Head, and Synthesis, 19-49, the Root to the Solar Plexus.
Because none of those partners is in the cross, it defines no centre by itself, and a chart that supplies one of them elsewhere completes the channel from outside the cross. The theme is fixed; the channels around it come from the rest of the bodygraph.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should I read a cross that has only one variant?
Read it as the same theme for everyone who carries it, with no quarter-of-the-wheel versions to compare. The arrangement is always 1/2 | 4/49. Differences between people come from the rest of their chart, such as type, authority and profile line detail, not from the cross itself.
Is it possible to have this cross with a profile other than 4/1?
No. In Human Design the 4/1 profile is the only one that carries a Juxtaposition cross, and Self-Expression is the Juxtaposition cross in this set. A Right Angle cross goes with profiles 1/3 to 4/6 and a Left Angle cross with 5/1 to 6/3, so a different profile points to a different angle.
Why might a Sun in gate 1 not mean Self-Expression?
Because other crosses also use gate 1 as the Personality Sun, including the fourth variant of the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx, 1/2 | 7/13. The Sun window, about November 5 to 11, is only a first clue. The Design gates and the profile settle which cross a chart actually carries.
Could the name Self-Expression describe the whole cross?
It is the name the catalogue gives, and it matches gate 1, which is also called Self-Expression. Beyond that the name is a label. The cross is four gates, Self-Expression, Direction of the Self, Formulization and Principles, and any fuller meaning is interpretation drawn from them.
