Right Angle Cross of Tension: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, the lower points taut like drawn strings to suggest pressure.

Two of the four gates in the Right Angle Cross of Tension sit in the same place, the Root. The Right Angle Cross of Tension is made of gate 21, the Hunter/Huntress, gate 48, Depth, gate 38, the Fighter, and gate 39, Provocation. The last two are Root gates, and the Root is the pressure centre in Human Design, the one tied to drive and stress. Read as a life theme, the cross asks what a person does with pressure: resist it, push back, dig deeper, or take control of it. This page follows that thread through the cross.

Two Root gates and what a pressure centre adds

Human Design names two pressure centres, the Head and the Root. The Root is described as the source of adrenaline-like drive, the push to get things moving and finished. A gate in the Root is a single point of that pressure, and it does not make the centre defined. Only a complete channel does, and Tension holds gates 38 and 39 without holding any channel partner.

What the Root adds to a cross is a particular colouring. Two of the four gates speak the language of struggle and provocation, so one reading takes the cross as a theme about friction more than about calm. That is an interpretation, and a person with the cross may feel it strongly or barely at all.

The Fighter and Provocation as a pair

Gate 38 is the Fighter and gate 39 is Provocation. They sit opposite each other on the wheel, so the Personality Sun and Earth, or the Design Sun and Earth, hold one each. The Fighter belongs to the channel 28-38, called Struggle, and Provocation to the channel 39-55, called Emoting, but neither partner is in the cross.

One way to see the pairing is as push and counter-push. Opposition meets obstruction, and neither gate settles easily. It could be read as a drive to test what holds, though the cross does not say whether a person tests with courage, with humour or with irritation.

The Hunter/Huntress and Depth on the other axis

Gate 21, the Hunter/Huntress, is a Heart gate and one end of the channel 21-45, Money. Gate 48, Depth, is a Spleen gate and one end of 16-48, Waves of Talent. They too are wheel opposites, so each variant gives one to each Sun and Earth pair. The Sun is in gate 21 about March 30 to April 4 and in gate 48 about October 2 to 8.

Set against the Root gates, they give the cross a second axis: a Heart gate and a Spleen gate beside two Root gates, so three centres take part in all.

When the Root pair is conscious

Tension 2 (39/38 | 21/48) has the Sun in gate 39, about July 1 to 7, and Tension 4 (38/39 | 48/21) has it in gate 38, about January 1 to 5. In both, the Root pair is on the Personality side and the Heart and Spleen gates are the Design half. In Tension (21/48 | 38/39) and Tension 3 (48/21 | 39/38) it is the other way round, and the Root pair is the Design half.

The dates move by about a day from year to year, and a Sun in one of those windows can still belong to a different cross if the Design side lands elsewhere. A calculated chart confirms it, and the Right Angle profile range, 1/3 to 4/6, has to fit as well.

Gates 38 and 39 are wheel opposites, so their partners, 28 and 55, are not in the cross and Tension alone does not define the Root.

Money, Struggle and Emoting waiting on other gates

Each gate of the cross has its channel partner outside it. Gate 21 pairs with gate 45 in Money, gate 48 with gate 16 in Waves of Talent, gate 38 with gate 28 in Struggle and gate 39 with gate 55 in Emoting. A channel is complete only when both of its gates are active, so each of these four would need the partner to come from elsewhere in the chart. Until it does, the gate of the cross is a single point and the pressure stays a theme rather than a defined circuit.

Heart, Spleen and Root in one cross

Three centres take part in Tension: the Heart through gate 21, the Spleen through gate 48 and the Root through gates 38 and 39. The Root is the only one counted twice, and it is the only pressure centre in the cross. Penetration and Service also carry two Root gates, so the doubling is not unique to Tension, but here both Root gates are wheel opposites that always sit together on the same side of the cross. Which of the three centres is defined in a given chart depends on complete channels, such as 21-45, 16-48, 28-38 or 39-55, and not on the cross alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What triggers the Root pressure in this cross?

The cross does not name a trigger. Gates 38 and 39 sit in the Root, and the Root is described as a source of drive and stress, but whether anything sets it off depends on the whole chart, including defined centres and channels. The cross offers a theme about handling pressure, not a schedule for when it arrives.

Which Tension has the Sun in gate 38?

Tension 4, with the quartet 38/39 | 48/21. The Personality Sun is in gate 38, the Fighter, about January 1 to 5, and the Personality Earth is in gate 39, Provocation. The Design Sun is in gate 48 and the Design Earth in gate 21. Here the Root pair is the conscious half. The dates can vary by about a day from one year to the next, and a chart confirms the cross.

Does Tension define the Root centre?

Not on its own. Gates 38 and 39 are opposite gates on the wheel, and their channel partners, 28 and 55, are not part of the cross. A gate alone never defines a centre; only a complete channel does. If gate 28 or gate 55 is active elsewhere in the chart, 28-38 Struggle or 39-55 Emoting can then define the Root.

Why are two of the four gates in the Root?

Because gates 38 and 39 are opposites on the wheel, and the Personality Sun and Earth, like the Design Sun and Earth, always occupy opposite gates. The wheel puts the Fighter and Provocation across from each other, so they appear together.
