Right Angle Cross of Service: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, with the four seasons marked as quiet bands around its rim.

The channel Judgment, 18-58, is complete in every variant of the Right Angle Cross of Service, because gates 18 and 58 are always both active. What changes is which gate leads. Four variants exist, one for each quarter of the wheel, led by Opinions in spring, Stillness in summer, Correction in autumn and Vitality in winter. The same four gates appear in every variant, just shuffled between the conscious and unconscious sides. Reading Service well starts with seeing that shuffle, because the person born in March and the person born in December are working with the same ingredients arranged differently.

Four seasons, four Sun gates

The Personality Sun gate names each variant. These windows are for 2026 and move by about a day from year to year.

  • Gate 17, Opinions, about March 24 to 30: the first variant, 17/18 | 58/52.
  • Gate 52, Stillness, about June 25 to July 1: the second variant, 52/58 | 17/18.
  • Gate 18, Correction, about September 26 to October 2: the third variant, 18/17 | 52/58.
  • Gate 58, Vitality, about December 25 to 31: the fourth variant, 58/52 | 18/17.

Seen in the northern hemisphere the four windows fall roughly one in each season, which is why the cross is easy to place on the wheel by the calendar. Each window is about six days wide, so a birth date lands in at most one of them. The rest of the year belongs to other crosses entirely.

Gates 17 and 18 are wheel opposites, and so are 52 and 58, so Service is built from two opposite pairs. In every variant the Personality Sun and Earth are one such pair and the Design Sun and Earth are the other.

Opinions in the Ajna, Correction in the Spleen

Gate 17 is Opinions and sits in the Ajna. Gate 18 is Correction and sits in the Spleen. They are opposite one another on the wheel, so whichever one holds the Sun, the other holds the Earth. In the first variant the Personality is 17/18, and in the third it is 18/17, with the Design Sun and Earth holding Vitality and Stillness, or Stillness and Vitality, beneath them. One reading sets the forming of a view beside the impulse to correct what is not working.

Stillness and Vitality in the Root

Gate 52 is Stillness and gate 58 is Vitality, and both sit in the Root. They too are opposites, and they carry the Design in the first and third variants, as 58/52 and 52/58, and the Personality in the second and fourth. When Opinions or Correction lead instead, the Root pair recedes into the Design and the conscious pair becomes the Ajna and Spleen gates.

Gates 18 and 58 are the two ends of the 18-58 channel, Judgment. Every variant of Service holds both, so the channel is complete in the chart whatever the season.

Opinions, Correction and the 18-58 channel

Because 18-58 is complete, the Spleen and the Root are defined whenever this cross is present. That fixes part of the picture before any other gate is considered: the cross does not leave those two centres open, whichever variant it is.

Gate 18 is Correction in the Spleen and gate 58 is Vitality in the Root, so the channel runs between them. Gates 17 and 52 are the two Service gates outside that channel, one in the Ajna and one in the Root.

On the Design side, Service holds 58/52, Service 2 holds 17/18, Service 3 holds 52/58 and Service 4 holds 18/17. Each variant therefore splits the four gates into two pairs, one for the Personality and one for the Design, and the Judgment gates 18 and 58 are always divided between the two.

Reaching for 62 and 9 from 17 and 52

Gate 17, Opinions, is one end of the channel 17-62, Acceptance, and its partner is gate 62, Detail. Gate 52, Stillness, is one end of 9-52, Concentration, and its partner is gate 9. Neither partner is in the cross, so those two gates stay open-ended unless the rest of the chart completes the channel.

Acceptance would join the Ajna to the Throat, and Concentration would join the Sacral to the Root. The Judgment channel, by contrast, already joins the Spleen to the Root inside the cross itself.

What the name Service does and does not claim

The name could suggest a life given over to others, but the gates are Opinions, Stillness, Correction and Vitality, and none of them speaks of an obligation. Service is a Right Angle cross, which Human Design pairs with profiles 1/3 through 4/6 and describes as personal destiny. The facts are four gates, their positions and the angle; the rest is reflection, and the rest of the chart shapes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

During which days of the year is the Sun in a Service gate?

About March 24 to 30 for gate 17, June 25 to July 1 for gate 52, September 26 to October 2 for gate 18 and December 25 to 31 for gate 58, using 2026 dates that can vary by about a day from one year to the next. The Sun gate only names the variant if the rest of the cross matches.

How does the Right Angle Cross of Service differ across its variants?

The four gates are the same in all of them: 17, 18, 52 and 58. What changes is which gate holds the Personality Sun and where the others sit. The first variant is 17/18 | 58/52, the second 52/58 | 17/18, the third 18/17 | 52/58 and the fourth 58/52 | 18/17.

What if my birthday falls in a Service window but my cross is different?

That can happen, because other crosses also have Opinions, Stillness, Correction or Vitality as their Sun gate. The window is a first clue, and the Design Sun and Earth decide. Check the incarnation cross in your calculated chart rather than inferring it from the calendar.

Are Service and the other Right Angle crosses built the same way?

Yes. Each Right Angle cross has four variants, one per quarter of the wheel, named by the Personality Sun gate, and suits profiles 1/3 through 4/6. Service follows that pattern with its four gates 17, 18, 52 and 58, and exists only as a Right Angle cross, never as a Left Angle or Juxtaposition one.
