Right Angle Cross of Eden: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, each point tinted for a different time of year.

A birthday is only the first clue to an incarnation cross, but for Eden it is a useful one, because the four variants fall in four clearly separate windows: mid-March, mid-June, mid-September and mid-December. Each window puts the Personality Sun in a different gate of the same set, 36, 12, 6 or 11. The first variant reads 36/6 | 11/12, which pairs Crisis and Friction with Ideas and Caution. Human Design describes an incarnation cross as a life theme, and as a Right Angle cross, Eden is a theme of personal destiny, carried by profiles 1/3 through 4/6.

Eden's four birth windows, from March to December

The Sun is in gate 36, Crisis, from about March 13 to 18, which gives the first variant, 36/6 | 11/12. It is in gate 12, Caution, from about June 13 to 19, giving 12/11 | 36/6. It is in gate 6, Friction, from about September 15 to 21, giving 6/36 | 12/11. And it is in gate 11, Ideas, from about December 14 to 20, giving 11/12 | 6/36. The windows are about three months apart, and each one shifts by roughly a day from year to year, so a birth close to an edge needs a chart rather than a calendar. Each window lasts about five to six days, and outside the four of them the Personality Sun is in a gate that Eden does not use, so the cross cannot be the Right Angle cross of that chart.

Crisis and Friction, two Solar Plexus gates

Gates 36 and 6 are opposite each other on the wheel, and both sit in the Solar Plexus, the emotional centre. Crisis and Friction are names that point to difficulty, and one way to see the pair is as a theme of meeting emotional intensity head-on. This is interpretation; the gate names alone do not say how a given person experiences them. What the pair does establish is that two of the four positions in Eden are held by emotional gates, which sets it apart from crosses made of gates from four different centres.

Ideas and Caution, thought beside speech

The second pair is gate 11, Ideas, in the Ajna, and gate 12, Caution, in the Throat. They are opposites too. Ideas gathers images and concepts; Caution concerns the care taken before putting something into words. Together they can be read as a pairing of how a thought forms and how it is released. In the first variant this is the Design side, the unconscious half, while Crisis and Friction are the conscious half. One reading is that the emotional gates then lead and the idea-and-speech pair works in the background.

How the two pairs trade places

Gates 36 and 6 are on the Personality side in the first and third variants, 36/6 | 11/12 and 6/36 | 12/11, and gates 12 and 11 are on it in the second and fourth, 12/11 | 36/6 and 11/12 | 6/36. The Design side always holds the other pair, so Eden never splits its emotional gates between the two sides. In the third variant, for instance, the Personality Sun is in gate 6 with the Earth in gate 36, while the Design Sun and Earth are in gates 12 and 11. Each variant is the same four gates; what moves is which pair is conscious and which gate of that pair carries the Sun.

Each of Eden's four variants is the same four gates; only which pair is conscious changes.

Transitoriness, Openness, Reproduction and Curiosity left open

None of the four gates has its channel partner inside the cross. Gate 36 reaches for gate 35 in Transitoriness, gate 12 for gate 22 in Openness, gate 6 for gate 59 in Reproduction and gate 11 for gate 56 in Curiosity. The partners sit in the Throat, the Solar Plexus, the Sacral and the Throat again. Each of these channels is complete only if the chart itself supplies the partner gate, Two of the channels, 35-36 and 12-22, would each join the Solar Plexus to the Throat. The cross marks four open ends and the rest of the bodygraph decides which of them are closed.

Eden with a defined or an open Solar Plexus

Carrying Crisis and Friction in a cross does not by itself define the Solar Plexus, since a gate alone never defines a centre. Only a full channel does. A person with Eden may therefore have an open emotional centre and meet the cross's emotional theme through other people, or a defined one where the same gates join a wider pattern, for instance through 35-36 or 6-59. The cross names the four placements; the rest of the bodygraph decides how steadily the theme is felt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Sun dates for the Right Angle Cross of Eden?

About March 13 to 18 for gate 36, June 13 to 19 for gate 12, September 15 to 21 for gate 6 and December 14 to 20 for gate 11. The dates can vary by about a day from one year to the next, and they only point toward the cross without confirming it.

Why would a birth in the right window still not be Eden?

Because the Sun date fixes only the Personality Sun gate. Eden also needs the Design Sun and Earth to complete the quartet, and a profile in the Right Angle range of 1/3 to 4/6. A birth in the window with a different Design pair or a Left Angle profile belongs to another cross.

When should I use a birth time instead of just a date?

When the birth falls near the edge of a window, or when the Design placements need checking. The Sun changes gate on a day that moves slightly from year to year, so a birth within a day or so of the edge needs a chart calculated from the full birth data.

Which part of Eden is the conscious side in the first variant?

In 36/6 | 11/12, the Personality side holds gates 36 and 6, Crisis and Friction. The Design side holds 11 and 12, Ideas and Caution. In the other variants the two pairs take turns on the Personality side, so the conscious half alternates between them.
