Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx: Incarnation Cross Meaning

5 min read
An equal-armed cross of four glowing points on a faint mandala wheel, marking a life-direction theme.

Four gates, one centre. The Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx is unusual because every gate in it belongs to the G centre, the part of the bodygraph that Human Design links to identity, direction and love. In its first variant the quartet reads 13/7 | 1/2: the Personality Sun in The Listener, the Personality Earth in Role of the Self, the Design Sun in Self-Expression and the Design Earth in Direction of the Self. As a Right Angle cross it describes personal destiny, carried by profiles 1/3 through 4/6, and the life theme it points to is one of orientation: where a life is headed, and who is heading there.

Four gates of direction, all drawn from the G centre

Gates 1, 2, 7 and 13 are the four G-centre gates that make up this cross. Crosses such as the Four Ways or Eden gather their gates from several centres, so their themes spread across different kinds of experience. The Sphinx draws on a single centre, as does the Vessel of Love. One way to read that is as a theme concentrated on one cluster of questions: who am I, what role do I take, which way do I go, and who do I listen to on the road. That is why the cross can be summarised as a direction theme rather than a theme of drive or expression.

Self-Expression facing Direction of the Self

Gate 1, Self-Expression, and gate 2, Direction of the Self, sit opposite each other on the wheel, and in every variant of the Sphinx they travel together as one Sun and Earth pair. One way to see the pairing is as the creative impulse (the first gate) matched with the sense of where it should go (the second). Expression without a heading can scatter; a heading without expression can stay unspoken. Held together, the two describe a person whose identity is both something to show and something to steer by.

A role to play and an ear to lend

The other pair is gate 7, Role of the Self, and gate 13, The Listener, again opposite each other. One reading takes Role of the Self as the part a person takes in a group and The Listener as what is taken in from others. Read side by side, they suggest a theme in which finding one's place depends partly on paying attention to the people already there. The Design side of the cross is the pair that was active about three months before birth, so in a variant such as 13/7 | 1/2 the listening and role pair is the conscious half and the expression and direction pair is the unconscious one.

Which pair is conscious from one Sphinx to the next

The Sphinx never changes its four gates, only the pair that holds the Personality side. Gates 7 and 13 are conscious in the first and third variants, 13/7 | 1/2 and 7/13 | 2/1, and gates 1 and 2 are conscious in the second and fourth, 2/1 | 13/7 and 1/2 | 7/13. Within each pair the two gates are wheel opposites, which is why the Sun and Earth always share one.

Activations that do not define the centre

A cross is a set of four placements, not a finished circuit. Having all four of its gates activated by the Sun and Earth does not by itself make the G centre defined, because a gate alone never defines a centre; only a complete channel does. A person may therefore carry the Sphinx while the G centre is open in their chart. One way to put it is that the direction theme then becomes a pattern the life keeps returning to, with the sense of identity shaped by the people and places nearby more than by a fixed internal compass.

Every gate of the Sphinx sits in the G centre, and every partner that would complete one of their channels lies outside the cross.

Why this cross has no motor or Throat gate

None of the four gates has its channel partner inside the cross. Gate 1 pairs with gate 8 in Inspiration, gate 2 with gate 14 in Beat, gate 7 with gate 31 in Alpha and gate 13 with gate 33 in Prodigal. Completing any of those channels takes a gate from outside the cross: 8, 31 and 33 in the Throat, 14 in the Sacral. On its own the Sphinx therefore defines no channel, no motor and no voice. It supplies a direction and says nothing about the means, which the rest of the chart brings. The same Sphinx can sit in a very quiet chart or a very busy one, and the direction theme is coloured by whatever else is defined.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there more than one version of the Sphinx cross?

Yes, there are four. They share the same four gates but change which one holds each position: 13/7 | 1/2, then 2/1 | 13/7, then 7/13 | 2/1, then 1/2 | 7/13. The Personality Sun gate separates them: 13 around February 2 to 7, 2 around May 3 to 9, 7 around August 5 to 11 and 1 around November 5 to 11.

What is the link between the Sphinx and the G centre?

All four gates of the cross, 1, 2, 7 and 13, are G-centre gates. Human Design ties that centre to identity, direction and love, which is why the cross is read as a direction theme. Having the cross does not by itself define the centre, since only full channels do that.

Why does the Design side matter for the Sphinx?

The cross is made of four placements, and two of them come from the Design Sun and Earth, calculated for about three months before birth. They are read as the less conscious half of the theme. Without them the Personality Sun date points toward a cross but does not confirm it.

How strong is the Sphinx if I was born on a Sun date?

The date only narrows the field. The Personality Sun gate gives one of the four variants, but the cross is confirmed only when the Design Sun and Earth match and the profile is one of 1/3 to 4/6, the Right Angle range. A birth in the window can still hold a different cross.
